Frequently Asked Questions
- Once I have submitted my application online, when can I expect to be contacted?
If your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications we receive, recruiters are not able to personally contact every applicant.
- Does applying in person increase my chances of receiving an interview?
MGH has implemented a paperless application process. Unfortunately we are no longer able to accept paper applications, even if they are delivered personally. Please visit our website to view and apply for positions.
- I work at MGH in a non-nursing role. Do I need to apply for a Staff RN position online?
Yes. All applicants, both internal and external, need to apply for positions through our website.
- What is the best time to apply for a new grad Staff RN position?
Positions are posted as they become available. We typically open job postings in February for students graduating in May.
- As a new graduate RN, can I be hired into a part-time or per diem position?
New graduates must be able to work full-time on a day/night rotation with weekends and holidays.
- I have an Associate's degree in Nursing. Can I apply for a Nursing position at MGH?
New Graduate RNs must have a BSN in order to be considered for Nursing positions at MGH. RNs with an Associate's degree in Nursing must have a minimum of one year of RN experience to qualify for MGH Nursing positions.
- I graduated from an accredited Nursing program and have a MA RN license, but I have not yet secured a Staff RN position. Can I work as a nursing assistant?
MGH policy states that we are not able to under employ an RN.
- Does MGH have an internship program for nursing students?
MGH does not have internship or externship programs for nursing students. However we do hire nursing students into Patient Care Associate (PCA) roles for the summer months. To qualify, students must have completed one or two clinical rotations and meet the requirements of a skills competency checklist. Students are hired as per diem employees and work hours on the unit as needed (which can be up to full-time, 40 hours).
- When should I apply for a nursing student summer job?
Late winter/early spring is when nursing directors will start considering students for open positions on their units. During this timeframe, students may apply by locating and applying for any Patient Care Associate (PCA) opening on the Job Opportunities pages of this website.
- Do you offer programs for RNs returning to acute care/bedside nursing?
MGH does not offer return to bedside programs, but these programs are offered at both Northeastern University and Boston College. For more information, please contact the schools directly.
- Does time worked in an Emergency Department setting count towards fulfilling the experience requirements for the MGH New Grad Critical Care program?
Unfortunately it does not. Please click here to learn more about this program and its requirements.
- I have an RN license in another state. Can I work in Massachusetts under that license?
In order to work in Massachusetts you must be licensed as an RN in Massachusetts.
- I'll be in Boston and I am wondering if I could make an appointment to tour some of the units?
Unfortunately, the Human Resources department is unable to provide unit tours. If you apply for a nursing position with MGH and are invited to interview with a specific unit, you will have the opportunity for a tour. Or, feel free to contact MGH's Volunteer Services department directly about a general tour of the hospital.
- Does MGH provide sponsorship to RNs outside the US?
You must have legal authorization to work in the United States in order to be considered for an RN position at MGH.
- I'm an experienced RN, so do I need to submit a cover letter along with my resume?
Although not a requirement, a cover letter will help recruiters best identify your nursing practice and professional goals.
